Yoga for brain fitness

Yoga and meditation have their roots in ancient cultures and have been widely acclaimed as a therapy for several conditions including stress relive and lack of sleep. yoga for brain fitness.jpgMost yoga postures are known to increase the heart rate, which supplies the brain with more oxygen and refreshes body and mind.  This is especially true for inverted asanas.

There is a direct connection between practicing yoga and brain fitness. The University of Illinois discovered that even short yoga exercises may improve your brain function and published the results of their study in the Journal of Physical Activity & Health. 30 female college students have been asked to complete cognitive tests on a computer screen. The first time the participants did not work out beforehand. The second time, they walked or jogged on a treadmill for 20 minutes before doing the exercise. The third time they completed 20 minutes of hatha yoga practice prior to the test. After 20 minutes of yoga, the women’s ability to focus was much better and they were able to process information quickly and more accurately.

A study by New York Medical College revealed that yoga enhances the functioning of Gamma Amino-Butyric Acid, an inhibitory neurotransmitter, which relieves the brain from possible stress and anxiety. Stress is known to interfere with the proper functioning of the brain, and extreme stress can cause epilepsy or depression. Yoga is therefore very important to the brain. Through stress reduction, yoga protects the brain from memory lapse, and brain cell damage.

Practicing asanas like downward dog and the warrior pose helps the brain to focus more on the exercise itself and less on the many thoughts in our heads that fuel stress. Most effective are inverted asanas because they increase the circulation of new blood into the brain, which improves the oxygen supply. Thereby your cognitive functions will be enhanced and your nervous system will be calmed. Inverted yoga poses will literally turn your world upside down!

What do you think? Is yoga a brain booster?
